San Antonio Real Estate
If you are thinking of relocating to San Antonio, you will be delighted to discover that unlike comparable cities on the West and East coasts, housing here is reasonably priced and widely available. So whether you prefer an urban setting or tranquil rolling pastures, you are sure to find an abundance of options that meet your criteria. For those who enjoy a central, walk-to-all location, here are some helpful hints and suggestions on finding your new home downtown. For information on specific listings, check the real estate section in the News-Express, San Antonio's major paper, which posts classifieds online and in print. Other places to check are Rent.com, San Antonio Apartments for Rent and San Antonio Apartment Experts, all of which offer a wide selection of inventory throughout the city with no fee to the renter.
If you enjoy an artsy environment, historic architecture and loft-style living, Alamo Heights should be top on your list of neighborhoods to explore. With the convenience of a downtown location and all the comforts of suburban living, many consider this the best of both worlds offering excellent shopping, two beautiful parks and the YMCA steps away. Drawback? As expected, the prices here tend to run significantly higher than other downtown spots, ranging from the mid-$600s per month for a studio to upwards of $3,000 for an expansive two or three bedroom lofts. Most developments feature on-site pools, gyms, laundry and covered parking.
Home to a population of students and young professionals, the San Antonio College area (advertised as ''SAC'') is increasingly becoming a coveted address. Walking distance to great shopping, dining, bars and nightlife, this is a great area to look into if you are interested in an active social or singles scene. Prices are moderate to high, with a number of sparkling new developments that feature fully renovated units with choice amenities like pools and covered parking. Rents will run you anywhere from the high $300s per month for a studio to around $1,200s for two-plus bedroom shareable units.
Another pricey yet beautiful area of the city is the King William District, located along the San Antonio River minutes from all of downtown's major attractions. This landmark district is comprised of 25 grand blocks of lavish Victorians and Edwardians that were constructed during the 19th Century for wealthy German merchants. While the neighborhood has since taken on a somewhat more casual, artsy feeling, it is still a fairly well-to-do community consisting of mostly single family dwellings. However, a number of mansions have been split into unique and lovely apartments, which are sure to please the old house lover. The median cost of a well-renovated one bedroom unit is approximately $700 per month.
Lastly, if you are on a tight budget, the streets just south of downtown might be worth considering. Thanks to multi-million dollar urban renewal programs, this neighborhood has undergone the beginnings of a massive facelift with a wealth of new construction affording inexpensive housing along with new playgrounds, parks, shops and restaurants. Do not choose a place sight unseen, as this is an area in the midst of revitalization. Studios will run you around $300 per month and large two bedroom units are as little as $650.
